CELEBRATING
OUR PAST, ENJOYING OUR PRESENT, PLANNING OUR FUTURE
Members and friends of the Hawthorn Bowling Club are proud of their
heritage and will be celebrating the club’s centenary in
2012.
A syndicate was formed in the early 1900’s with the purpose of securing
land in Hawthorn for recreational purposes before it was all
subdivided. The
complex, administered by a Trust, was named after the first
SA Labour Premier, the late Honourable Tom Price, who had
been a Hawthorn resident.
When the oval was laid out, there was not enough land
for the bowling green so additional land was purchased
with a Monmouth
Road
frontage. Four
rinks were put down and on November 15 1912, the Hawthorn
Bowling Club was formed.
An informal social function at the club on January 14th, following the
first pennant match in January 2012 will open the centenary
year’s celebrations.
When the electric lights were switched on over the
four rinks, just 2 months after the club’s inception, the
Mitcham Brass Band was asked to attend and the band will be
once again be in attendance.
In the evening before the opening of the 20012/13 season, a Junior Squad
will play a match against Pennant teams, finishing with a
presentation of prizes and a barbecue.
The Hawthorn Women’s 85th birthday will be celebrated in October and
guests will include members of Kensington/Marryatville and
Payneham Bowling Clubs as these three clubs (K/M was then Kensington Gardens)
were the inaugural South Australian women’s clubs and formed
the South Australian Women’s Bowling Association in 1930.
Several projects will be undertaken. There will be centenary wine
available throughout the year and tournaments and social
occasions will reflect the centenary year in prizes and
presentations.
The celebrations will culminate with the major event, a cocktail party,
to be held in November, the date to allow the attendance of
visiting international teams, in
Adelaide
for the World Championships.
The club’s history book will be launched at this
occasion.
